My NY Sister

sisterdrink.jpg

Since the last post was an embarrassing moment for me, I thought I would also share an email from my sister about her recent debacle. All in the family:

I met my Israeli friends, at the bar downstairs. We are there almost everyday so we became good friends. Well, they were trying to keep their wedding small, so they only invited family. However, because we started hanging out so much, they invited me.

So, the invitation says wedding starts at 5. I show up at 4:30 because I’m thinking American wedding time. I show up with the mother of the groom. Nobody else is there. She is the beautiful, hardy Persian Jewish woman. She looks at me and says “Who are you? Why are you here? You have stuff on the back of your dress.” So we’re off to a good start.

Because I had walked to the wedding, my entire back was sweaty and had soaked through my dress. Also something dripped on me so it looked like I had peed on myself. I locked myself in the bathroom and called Sarah to bring me a new dress. Then you can picture the next 2 hours of me awkwardly milling around. It is a huge family reunion for them. Literally, there was only 2 people there who weren’t part of the family. I was one. The ceremony was apparently not going to start anytime soon. I don’t know anyone, and everyone is speaking Hebrew. I tried to yuck it up with a few people and have them teach me basic Hebrew phrases, but I was feeling so awkward it was hard to turn “friendly Catherine” on. I was just standing there, so awkward that I didn’t know what to do with my arms.

Finally, they started serving drinks, which I thought would help me relax. So I started enjoying wine like a classy lady. 40 cocktails later I was so sloshed, I was dancing with the mother of the bride, holding hands with random Serbian men, and playing the drums with the brides brother. All in all, I think I made a great impression. (I’m shaking my head right now).

Bravo Sis!

I forgot to tell you that the brides brother, who I played the bongos with, also leads exotic tours of Sinai. I think I volunteered to be a co-tour leader.
