Lianne Krueger Sullivan

I had a wonderful visit with Lianne this weekend (she came over to talk with me about our mutual interests in teaching anatomy/figure drawing). She is a professional medical illustrator wth a degree from Johns Hopkins University and now also teaches a variety of art courses at Brookhaven College. Check out her beautiful work on her beautiful website.
The issues she brought up are fascinating … questions really. What role should anatomy play in a life drawing class? Could/should anatomy lessons be reinforced with 3d modelling lessons? Is a structural drawing class necessary as a precursor to life drawing/anatomical drawing? — Ultimately, all of these questions are complicated by the aspect of time. All are great ideas, but a program only has two or four years. So the bigger question becomes: what should an art program consist of? This is a great conversation because everyone always has an opinion. Plus, I think the sophistication of new technology makes the question relevant; and the answer is not merely throwing in a photoshop/video (new media) class here and there. The answer is something much more integrated that treats technology as a tool rather than a topic. Discuss.

I’ve been following your blog for what, a month? I would LOVE to come up with a ciriculum with you. It would have to be a four year plan I feel. And not be restricted by what can be done in institutions currently, or limited by funding, but initially a pure brain-storm of what would be perfect. Work out the reality later.

The “reality” is usually the problem. But is sure is fun thinking outside the box. I’d be curious to hear your philosophy first — for each year of development. What are your values?

I will have to do this, this summer.
It seems like a healthy assignment.
“What is your philosophy? and please outline your values. Give examples and a four year lesson plan” I don’t think a teacher or school ever gave me such a document or book. Could it be an interactive program or another blog or the foundation for a movement? Alas. . . I have to go to work.

[…] After the lecture, we went to have dinner, and were joined by Lianne Sullivan (who also has a background in dissection). A very interesting dinner full of great dissection conversation! Getting to know Frank (a little) personally has also been a pleasure. A truly kind person with amazing zeal. For instance, I learned he also has a passion for sailing and chocolate. […]
